Zoomies
What it means
Vets call them FRAPs — frenetic random activity periods. They are a normal way for dogs and cats to burn off energy or stress.
Where it came from
Dictionary.com says "zoomies" has been used for pet behaviour since at least the early 2000s: "zoom" plus the cosy -ies ending of "the munchies". The technical name is frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs); Wikipedia notes they usually last a few minutes or less, the cause is not known, and they are often linked to moments of transition such as an owner coming home. "Ginger zoomies" is a common variant for orange cats.
