Smalltown Boy Cats
What it means
The 21-second clip has a fixed order: one cat clutches its head and screams into a wide-angle lens while the other dances calmly behind it, they swap, both dance together, then both charge the camera. The joke is that the apparent emergency turns into choreography a second later. People remake it with two of their own pets, a cat and a dog, or themselves and their pet.
Where it came from
The routine comes from a human duet, "Don't cry. Dance!", posted on Instagram on 4 August 2026 by @elvira.mua.music and dancer @mr_unvrs. On 2 October 2026 AI creator @bellvtrix.ai remade it shot for shot with two cats standing on their hind legs. Mendoi cites a trend tracker at about 10.7 million TikTok views for that clip on 19 October; Jump on the Trend read about 10.9 million plays on 23 October and estimates about 46 million views across the original and remakes. It is a different moment from the 2024 "dance like it's the 80s" challenge on the same song.

FAQ
Are the Smalltown Boy cats real?
No. The viral clip is AI-generated; real cats were not filmed dancing on their hind legs.
What song is in the cat dance?
"Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat with Jimmy Somerville, released in 1984.
Is it the same as the 80s dance challenge?
No. That was a 2024 TikTok trend of parents dancing like it was the 1980s; the 2026 cat format is scream, swap, dance, rush the lens.
